About the research project
This project brings phenomenology into dialogue with cognitive science, the human sciences, computer science, and technology studies to address some of the most pressing questions of our time. Rather than treating technologies as neutral tools, phenomenology explores how they shape our experience, relationships, self-understanding, and ways of inhabiting the world. Since Martin Heidegger's pioneering critiques of technology in the 1930s, scholars have increasingly examined how technological systems influence human agency, meaning, and social life.
Today, the rapid development of artificial intelligence makes this work more urgent than ever. AI is transforming healthcare, education, work, communication, and decision-making, creating new opportunities while also raising profound ethical and social challenges. By combining philosophical analysis with insights from other disciplines, this project will develop a richer understanding of how AI and related technologies are reshaping human experience. Its goal is not only to advance theory but also to help ensure that emerging technologies serve human flourishing, promote social justice, and support genuine human needs, rather than being driven solely by efficiency, profit, or other narrow interests.
The philosophy program invites applications for projects that address research questions in the domains of philosophy of technology, feminism and ethics informed by the work of phenomenological thinkers past and present.
