About the research project
This project will draw lessons from the historical performance of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) in managing global environmental and geopolitical tensions affecting the Antarctic region. Case studies of earlier environmental challenges, such as ozone depletion and nuclear weapons testing, will illuminate how the ATS has responded to global environmental issues. Complementary case studies of geopolitical tension, such as Cold War arms control disputes and the Falklands/Malvinas conflict, will examine how the ATS has managed earlier moments of geopolitical strain affecting the region. Together, these case studies will provide a robust foundation for assessing how current environmental and geopolitical challenges, notably climate change and rising global instability, are testing the ATS today.
Drawing on interdisciplinary negotiation theory, the project will further examine how key Antarctic Treaty states might respond more effectively to the combined challenges of climate change and geopolitical turbulence in the Antarctic region.
