About the research project

Power systems are transitioning rapidly to being based on renewable energy sources supported by energy storage. This is introducing challenges in terms of power system security and stability, and will require large capacity of flexible storage capable of rapid response. Pumped hydro storage, currently by far the largest energy storage technology in power systems globally and still unparalleled in terms of economically feasible long duration storage, has so far not offered this rapid response capability, but the technology will be required to evolve and adapt so that it is able to do so in future. 

This project will develop dynamic models of hydraulics, waterway, turbine, machine and converter and will develop innovative control approaches that will enable variable speed pumped hydro to provide rapid response for power system stability in both turbining and pumping modes and will investigate operation during transition between modes. The project will involve model validation and extensive experimental work using the School of Engineering's brand new micro (10 kW) pumped hydro test system. Validated models will be used to subsequently assess the dynamic performance capabilities of PHS systems in providing power systems ancillary services, for integration of PHS into 100% renewables based systems. The project will feature case-studies of the Tasmanian power system, already a world leader in hydro power systems, incorporating future scenarios identified by Tasmanian industry, the Australian Energy Market Operator and in state government strategy and policy.

Funding

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:

  • a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years
  • a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
  • a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)

A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

  • Applications are open to applicants from electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or physics discipline backgrounds only.
  • Applicants must be able to undertake the project on-campus

Selection criteria

The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.

Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:

  • Some experience with time-domain system modelling and simulating dynamic systems

Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:

  • Strong background in power systems engineering and/or power electronics converters and/or hydropower systems
