About the research project
This PhD project will advance understanding of seagrass restoration opportunities in Tasmanian ecosystems, with an emphasis on improving habitat for Critically Endangered red handfish (Thymichthys politus). The research will explore key aspects of seagrass biology and physiology – particularly flowering, growth and resilience – in response to key environmental drivers such as temperature, light and nutrient availability. In doing so, it will address significant knowledge gaps that currently limit successful habitat recovery, particularly in the context of climate change and anthropogenic stressors.
By integrating field and laboratory surveys and experiments, the project will inform best-practice restoration methods at the red handfish sites and beyond. These include seedling propagation, transplanting strategies, habitat enhancement, and long-term management approaches.
While the research is centred on red handfish recovery, the outcomes of this research will have broader applications for seagrass restoration efforts across Tasmania's coastal ecosystems. Ultimately the project aims to contribute to more effective, science-based conservation and habitat rehabilitation strategies at both local and regional scales.
Specific objectives include:
- Investigate the influence of key environmental variables (e.g. temperature, nutrients, light) on seagrass flower development, health, and timing through controlled laboratory experiments.
- Develop and test restoration techniques for seagrass at red handfish site(s), including seedling propagation, transplanting, habitat enhancement, and best practices for long-term meadow management and threat mitigation.
- Identifying optimal restoration windows by analysing existing monitoring data in combination with key environmental drivers to guide timing of seagrass restoration efforts in Tasmania.
The outcomes of the project will contribute to improved seagrass restoration success and better-inform management strategies for red handfish conservation and seagrass habitat restoration at both local and regional scales.

Funding
Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

Selection criteria
The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:
- Expertise in marine biology and ecology: A strong background in marine biology and ecology is critical for understanding the biological and ecological aspects of seagrass meadows
- Marine field-work experience, including Advanced Open Water SCUBA qualification (or preferably Scientific Diver)
- Data collection and analysis skills: Ability to analyse observational data using statistical and computational methods
- Project management: Project management skills to coordinate various aspects of the research, including experimental design, data collection, and analysis. This also involves managing timelines, resources, and team members effectively
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to document research findings, prepare manuscripts, and present results to stakeholders
Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:
- Experience with marine restoration projects: Previous experience working on marine restoration projects, particularly those involving key habitats, will enhance the capacity to undertake this project effectively
- Advanced Statistical and Computational Skills: Proficiency in advanced statistical methods and computational tools for analysing complex ecological data and developing predictive models
- Collaboration and Networking Skills: Ability to collaborate with international research institutions, government agencies, and industry partners. Experience in building and maintaining professional networks in the field of marine science
- Public Engagement and Outreach Experience: Experience in public engagement and outreach activities to communicate research findings to a broader audience and foster support for marine conservation initiatives
