Attitudinal impact of the UDMOOC

About the research project

This PhD project will investigate whether participation in the highly successful Understanding Dementia Massive Open Online Course

(UDMOOC) leads to measurable changes in attitudes toward dementia. The UDMOOC, developed by the Wicking Dementia Research

and Education Centre, has reached over 400,000 participants globally and is known to significantly improve dementia knowledge.

However, its potential to shift perceptions—particularly around stigma —has not been systematically explored.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the project will assess pre- and post-course attitudes among diverse participant groups, including

community members, health professionals, and carers. Quantitative surveys will be complemented by qualitative interviews to capture

nuanced changes in understanding and empathy. The research will also explore how course design elements—such as storytelling, lived

experience narratives, and interactive content—contribute to attitudinal shifts.

Findings will inform the development of future dementia education initiatives, with implications for policy and practice. Ultimately, this

project aims to contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate response to dementia by society and health and care systems.

Funding

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:

• a living allowance stipend funded by University of Tasmania of $34,315 per annum for 3.5 years
• a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
• a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)

A tuition fee offset may be offered to eligible international applicants following competitive assessment

• Open to applicants with backgrounds in public health, education, or other health and social sciences.

Selection criteria

The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.

3. In your application:
   • Copy and paste the title of the project from this advertisement into your application. If you don’t correctly do this your application may be rejected.
   • Submit a signed supervisory support form, a CV including contact details of 2 referees and your project research proposal.
4. Apply prior to 1 October 2026.
