Student support

There are a number of avenues available to Rural Clinical School students who require support academically, socially or financially to help cover day-to-day costs, travel and relocation expenses, as well as accommodation.

Clinical Academic Supervisors

RCS students are allocated a Clinical Academic Supervisor who is part of the team of lecturers in rural medical practice. Students are encouraged to meet with their supervisor during Group Learning Weeks and Group Learning Programs (GLWs / GLPs). While the meetings are relatively informal, they should follow an agenda which reflects the student's interests and concerns. Supervisors are available by email and phone at other times, and students may arrange additional meetings. Other RCS staff are available for mentoring and support.

Peer Support

Year 4 and 5 students share learning opportunities, with the senior students often running practice OSCE scenarios while acting as mentors. This mutual support is strongly encouraged at the RCS. Junior doctors and registrars are also happy to facilitate extra education or skills sessions while providing tremendous support in the clinical setting on both a professional and pastoral level.

Social facilities and activities

Both campuses offer modern lounge and kitchen facilities, with table tennis, a BBQ area, and flat screen TV located in Burnie. A number of student/staff activities are coordinated throughout the academic year.

IT Support

The RCS provides IT assistance for students. If you have a problem or question please see the reception staff.

Cradle Coast campus Student Support

Additional support is available to students at the nearby Cradle Coast campus on Mooreville Road where staff can provide course advice, study assistance and access to a counsellor. Book an appointment with a counsellor.
