What is Video Conferencing?
Video conferencing allows two or more compatible rooms to be connected so that attendees in all locations can see and hear each other, and share content simultaneously. The University of Tasmania video conferencing system is also capable of connecting to video conference capable venues from other organisations and institutions.
Video Conferencing for Students
Video conferencing allows student groups located at any of the campuses to participate in courses that have staff on only one campus. It is heavily used for teaching, recruitment interviews, consultation, and research. On occasion it is used for lecturers or students from the University to participate in or provide teaching to other universities and educational institutions around the world.
Video Conferencing for Staff
Video conferencing can be used for cross campus committee and staff meetings, presentations, interviews and consultations. Staff members also have the option to join a video conference from their own computer via Skype, if they are unable to attend in person.

Information Technology Services (ITS) owns and maintains Polycom and Codian Video conferencing bridges. These bridges (MCU - Multipoint Control Unit) are used to dial all conferences booked within ITS dedicated venues and the video-enabled lecture theatres on the Cradle Coast, Newnham and Sandy Bay campuses.
A function of this system is that more than two sites can be connected into a single conference. This provides ITS with the ability to connect video conference units that function over different network types, ie H323 or IP, as well as connecting in audio only (telephone) sites.
Schools and Sections of the University are welcome to make use of this functionality in the use of their own IP/H323 video conference units.
