Types of double degree
Our double degrees come in two formats:
- Completing two undergraduate degrees. For example, a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws.
- Completing a bachelor's degree and a postgraduate degree. For example, a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Teaching, or a Bachelor of Education (Primary) and a Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood. These are sometimes called 'vertical doubles'.
In both cases, you can graduate up to two years faster than if you pursued each course individually. You can read more about how double degrees work in our frequently asked questions.

Note - there are two combined degrees, which means you'll receive the one testamur. These are the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine.

- If you cannot find your double degree using the course name search, you'll need to use Double degree (4 year) (X3Y) in the course name search, then enter both degree names.
- If your double degree includes the Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Agricultural Science, you'll need to use Double degree (5 year) (X3Z) in the course name search, then enter both degree names.

With a double degree, you can complete two degrees in a much shorter time than completing both separately.
When you choose a double degree, you'll complete all the core, major and discipline elective units required to complete both courses. But you do not need to complete student electives for either course.
With fewer units to study, you can complete two degrees and save up to two years full-time study.
For example, the Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Psychological Science usually take three years of full-time study each to complete. However, choosing them as a double degree will only take you four years of full-time study to complete.
Another example is choosing the Bachelor of Education and the Master of Teaching, which will take four years to complete, instead of six years if completed separately.
Because double degrees don’t have any electives, there's a good chance you'll need to choose a major for each course from the start of your studies. It's good to be aware that, while you can change majors, this could add additional time to your studies.

Most double degrees can be completed in four years full-time. Double degrees which include the Bachelor of Laws or the Bachelor of Agricultural Science can be completed in five years full-time.
You must meet the entry requirements for both courses you intend to study within your double degree. Please refer to the entry requirements section on each individual course page for more information.
At the University of Tasmania, we're committed to offering you the widest range of flexible study options. However, due to accreditation requirements, there are some courses that cannot be included in a double degree:
- Bachelor of Architecture and Built Environments
- Bachelor of Education (Applied Learning)
- Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education)
- Bachelor of Education (Primary)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours*
- Bachelor of Maritime Engineering (Specialisation) (Honours)
- Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine
- Bachelor of Nautical Science
- Bachelor of Exercise Science
- Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine
- Bachelor of Nursing
- Bachelor of Paramedicine
- Bachelor of Pharmacy with Applied Honours
- Bachelor of Social Work with Honours
- Any Pathway, Foundation, Diploma or Associate Degree program
Combined degrees
While similar to a double degree, a combined degree is an undergraduate degree that includes components from two degrees but satisfies the minimum requirements of one (rather than both) individual degrees.
This also means that you will receive a single degree certificate (also known as a testamur) when you graduate.
There are two combined degrees, these are the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine.
Regarding majors, there are some exclusions. This includes choosing majors from one degree that are similar in content to the other degree.
For example, in a double degree of Arts and Psychological Science, you would not be able to choose the major Psychological Science in the Bachelor of Arts.

For example you may be able to undertake a double major within a single degree, or study a diploma concurrently with your degree.
You will need to apply for the undergraduate degree by itself, which will present an option to apply for the undergraduate and postgraduate double.
For example, to apply for the Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation and the Master of Protected Area Conservation:
- Apply for the P3J Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation
- Select the Bachelor of Natural Environments and Conservation and the Master of Protected Area Conservation option
