Overview

The Waterworth Optical Collection contains images and objects that illustrate how the Hobart Optical Annexe and Waterworth factory contributed to Australia’s war effort and after the war continued to operate as a successful business. Nearly 200 women of different ages worked together in teams to make, fix and design thousands of finely honed glass and metal objects. This honours scholarship will examine how women played a crucial role in the success of the business to about 1960 and illustrate the changing role of women in Tasmanian society.
