Stuart Valentine Asian Language Travel Scholarship

Browse our domestic scholarships offerings.

Overview

This scholarship has been generously funded by a University of Tasmania alumnus Stuart Valentine [BA, LLB (Hons) 1981] who, during his own studies, received a travel scholarship that enabled him to learn the language he studied at university, in the country where it was spoken, while immersing himself in a new culture. Inspired by the transformative impact of that experience, he now wishes to offer a similar opportunity to current and future students at the University.

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students to learn an Asian language at the University, by providing financial support to undertake a short-term study course in their chosen language in the country where the language is spoken. It aims to cover all or most of the cost of tuition, airfare and accommodation, so students who wish to undertake short-term intensive language courses abroad are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility

  • Available to a current Tasmanian student who plans to undertake Asian language study in 2026, in a country where that language is spoken.
  • Travel may be undertaken as part of an international exchange program, or other approved study opportunity overseas (short course or semester study abroad) for a minimum of two weeks.
  • The successful recipient will have completed at least one Asian language unit at the University.
  • Preference will be given to students studying Mandarin Chinese or Indonesian.
  • Preference is to support students undertaking an intensive short course, where the scholarship can fund most of or all the related tuition, flights & accommodation.
