Established in 1992, the Clifford Craig Foundation is the key charity supporting the communities of North and North West Tasmania to access the best hospital and health care. The work of the Clifford Craig Foundation aims to focus on disease prevention and health promotion to improve the health of communities in the North and North-West of Tasmania by delivering the following outcomes; providing a sustainable local medical research program, facilitating increased use of translational clinical practice, improving access to patient care resources and quality equipment and increasing access to education and training for Hospitals and Community Healthcare staff to support recruitment and retention of Hospitals and Community Healthcare staff.
The Foundation generously supports an annual Medical Student Research Scholarship to provide medical students with the necessary financial support to undertake a designated independent research project (as their MD Professional Project from 2026) at the Launceston Clinical School and Launceston General Hospital.
Scholarship funds will be used for both personal expenses and to support the necessary research activities to achieve the desired research outcomes as designated in the proposed research project. For access to the designated research project proposal please contact Kathryn.Ogden@utas.edu.au.
Eligibility
- Available to students commencing in Year 4 at the Launceston Clinical School in 2026, with the intention to remain at the LCS in Year 5.
- This scholarship is awarded to an MD Professional Project. MD Professional Projects can be undertaken by individuals or teams, for students collaborating in a team, each medical student team member will be required to submit an application for this scholarship. In the case that the scholarship is awarded to a team the funding will be split evenly between the members of the team.
- Selection will be competitive and will be based on the response to application questions and an assessment of the suitability of the proposed research project.

- Achieve a minimum Pass result in all units studied each semester
Amount
The MD Professional Project will be awarded $12,000 over 2 years ($6,000 per year), with the possibility of additional funding for publication costs of a resultant paper.
