Dean's Summer Research Scholarship

Overview

The following schools are keen to introduce students to the research activities undertaken within their schools:

  • School of Natural Sciences (SNS)
  • School of Geography, Planning and Spatial Sciences (GPSS)
  • School of Architecture and Design (A&D)
  • School of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), and
  • Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA)

A number of scholarships valued at $2,000 (or $3,000 for students participating in the Catalyst Program) will be awarded to successful students allowing them to work in a research or design group in the schools listed for a period of 6 to 8 weeks over the 2023 Spring/2024 Summer vacation period.

Scholarship recipients will work alongside their supervisor and fellow graduate research students to gain experience in identifying and solving research or design problems. This experience will provide students with excellent preparation for future Postgraduate programs.

Eligibility

  • The Dean's Summer Research Program is available to current students within the College of Sciences and Engineering (CoSE) who meet the following criteria:
    • to be eligible you must have completed at least one semester of full-time study (or equivalent) in an undergraduate or Honours degree in CoSE (students currently enrolled in first year MITS will also be considered),
    • to be eligible for admission to the Bachelor of Philosophy and have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.5 or higher
    • if you are an International student you must have a current visa and valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) in your primary degree for the duration of your proposed program
    • have identified a suitable project and CoSE academic supervisor, who has approved your application before submission, and
    • be available to complete your 6-8-week project over a period agreed with your supervisor between early November 2023 and late February 2024.
  • Successful applicants will be enrolled in the relevant Research Experience Program unit in the Bachelor of Philosophy.
  • Assessment in these units is structured around the activities undertaken during the project (such as project planning, maintaining records and analysing data, and communication).
  • This unit is a 25% unit, equivalent to two “standard” 12.5% units.
  • The expected amount of time spent on the project is therefore approximately 200-250 hours over 6-8 weeks.
