Overview
The late Soren Nielsen, a Danish migrant to Tasmania, provided a bequest to the engineering discipline at the University of Tasmania to fund this scholarship.
The late Soren Nielsen immigrated to Tasmania from Denmark with his parents in the 1950s and lived the rest of his life in Hobart, where he worked for the Australian Customs Service. He maintained the passion for the sea often shared by his countrymen, and was building a substantial steel boat at the time of his death from cancer in 2008. His estate provided a generous gift to the School of Engineering at UTAS, used to fund this scholarship which aims to support and encourage talented students to broaden their educational experience in engineering by travelling overseas during their course.
Eligibility
- Available to a student in the Engineering discipline in Hobart who is undertaking an international exchange program or another approved study opportunity overseas and who is not already receiving financial support for their travel.
- Applicants must be travelling overseas in the second half of 2026 or the first half of 2027.
- On their return from overseas, the recipient may be asked to share their experiences by way of a presentation to other potential applicants.
