Overview

Dr Mary Schramm built an extraordinary international medical career. In the early years of her education, she completed her pre-med studies in Hobart before relocating interstate to undertake her medical degree, as medicine was not yet offered in Tasmania. The University of Tasmania would not establish its School of Medicine until more than a decade later. Following her training, Dr Schramm gained experience across Australia, India and the UK before embarking on a remarkable career in Fiji, where she spent more than 30 years. There, she pioneered advances in medical education and significantly strengthened maternity and gynaecological services, improving outcomes for women across the region. Her outstanding contribution was internationally recognised at the FIGO World Congress 2015, where she received an award through the FIGO Awards Program honouring women obstetrician–gynaecologists. Now having returned to her hometown in North-East Tasmania, Dr Schramm is focused on giving back. Drawing on her own experience of the barriers faced by Tasmanian students in earlier decades, she hopes to support undergraduate medical students from Northern Tasmania, particularly those balancing study with the demanding requirements of a medical degree
