Overview
This scholarship has been established in memory of the late Valentine (Val) Smith, and in honour of his commitment to and advocacy for the University of Tasmania.
Despite the barriers Val faced growing up in rural Tasmania, he went on to study at the University in Hobart, graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce and later a Bachelor of Laws. As an alumnus, Val provided significant support to the University, both as an advocate and as a donor. As a result of his generous and long-standing philanthropic support, he was recognised as a Foundation Benefactor and Domain Society member and was one of the original members of the University Foundation Board of Governors. Val was instrumental in providing input and guidance into the Rules of the University of Tasmania Foundation Inc during its establishment. Later, Val remained involved as a member of the Friends of the University.
This scholarship aims to provide better access to tertiary education for rural Tasmanian students, like Val.
Eligibility
- This scholarship is available to a Tasmanian student, commencing a bachelor’s degree in any discipline who has not previously undertaken undergraduate study.
- The successful recipient will be from a rural region of Tasmania, ideally meeting at least two of the following criteria:
- Has a permanent home address considered to be outer regional, remote or very remote according to the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).
- Grew up in a rural Tasmanian area (e.g. at least 20kms from cities or major towns).
- Attended a Tasmanian district school for Years 11 and 12.
- Has demonstrated active participation in community service or leadership roles within their home and/or other rural communities.
- Selection will be based on demonstration of financial need, and how the scholarship will help you succeed.
- Academic merit will be considered during the selection process to demonstrate likelihood of success in your chosen field.
- Preference will be given to applicants who are the first in their family to attend University.
- Preference may also be given to applicants who are undertaking Agricultural Science or Law, especially those considering a focus on Sustainable Agriculture or Environmental Law.

- Achieve a minimum Pass result in all units studied each semester
