Overview

This scholarship is made possible through the generosity of the Dr Johnny Wu and Dr Tze Lai Family Foundation, which was established to provide support, promoting individual and community excellence for high potential recipients, from high school to university studies, and from elite international sports to medical research. These two University of Tasmania alumni originated from Hong Kong via the Northwest coast and Malaysia before meeting at the Hobart Medical School, where they both graduated with Honours, with Johnny being awarded the graduating dux and 19 prizes.

As a past recipient of a number of university undergraduate scholarships and bursaries, as well as the Australian Postgraduate Award with stipend for his Masters research degree on Glaucoma, Dr Wu is grateful for the opportunity to give back to the University and the community.

Dr Wu and Dr Lai contribute as Ophthalmic surgeons through WA Eye Specialists and as adjunct Associate Professors, driven by their beliefs in health and education, particularly for the next generation of leaders. This annual scholarship aims to provide financial support for Tasmanian students in need during their undergraduate degrees, who demonstrate aptitude in academia, leadership, arts, sports, and/or community service.
