Overview
Dr Stephen Gumley AO first graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1979 with first class honours in Engineering and was Tasmanian Rhodes Scholar in that same year. After being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from Oxford University, UK in 1982, he returned to the University of Tasmania to complete a Master of Business in 1994. Dr Gumley has also had an extensive engineering management career, including serving as a Vice President of Boeing in the USA and has served as the Chief Executive Officer for seven organisations across Australia, including the Australian Submarine Corporation, Preston Aviation Solutions, Hutchison Ports Australia, Murray Irrigation, and the Defence Material Organisation where he was responsible for acquisition and sustainment of Australian Defence military equipment and responsible for over 7000 staff. Dr Gumley was also Chairman of TasWater from 2019 - 2024.
Dr Gumley has been recognised for his impressive career several times over the years. In 2006 Engineers Australia named him one of the 100 most influential engineers in Australia, in 2010 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for his recognised service to public sector management, and later in 2010 he received one of the highest forms of acknowledgement by the University of Tasmania, receiving an Honorary Doctorate in Engineering.
This endowed prize has been established by Dr Gumley in celebration of his long career and connection to the University, and to compliment the Rick Gumley Electrical Engineering Prize, which he established in 2021 in honour of his late father and the Stephen Gumley Prize in Mechanical Engineering.
Eligibility
Awarded to the best completed third year Civil Engineering student. The successful award recipient will have completed at least 75 credit points that year and have the highest overall average with a minimum score of 70 percent in all third-year engineering units.
