Overview
S. W Carey became the founding professor of the Department of Geology at the University of Tasmania in 1946. He was an important figure in Earth Sciences during his tenure as the Head of the Department for 30 years, inspiring his students with his vigour and enthusiasm. He was an important theorist on early ideas of the tectonics of the Earth. The prize from the Tasmania
Division of the Geological Society of Australia recognises S.W Carey's encouragement of students to continue his legacy of excellence in Earth Science research.
Eligibility
Prize will be awarded to the student with the highest mark for an Earth Sciences-themed Honours thesis. The thesis is the only part of the mark that will be taken into account. A student will be eligible in the year they hand in their thesis so both mid-year and end of year submissions will be assessed for the prize.
