Introduction
Literacy in Secondary School is designed to help you develop your knowledge and skills for the teaching of literacy in secondary classrooms. With a focus on the nature of literacy in Australia, this unit will reveal the vital role language and literacy plays in the learning process across the curriculum. You will explore literacy through curriculum documents and the requirements of their implementation across different discipline areas. Explorations of literacy will be related to current theories of language development and acquisition, their impact on teaching and learning, and the literacy demands/requirements of the teaching profession.

Teaching Pattern | This unit is taught in mixed mode involving both synchronous and asynchronous experiences. All students will engage with the course content through weekly online recorded lectures (1.5 hrs) and tasks including weekly readings (2 hrs), discussion boards and quizzes as well as through the completion of assignments. There are a number of options for tutorial participation. You should select one or more of the following options that best fit your learning needs and constraints: On campus: Weekly f2f tutorial in Hobart (2hrs) for students enrolled on campus. Online students can also zoom in and participate synchronously in the f2f tutorial each week. Off campus: Online only students can participate in the tutorial task asynchronously by completing any online tasks and posting a response in the online space (2hrs). You will receive comments, feedback and advice from our expert online tutor. Off campus: A one-hour synchronous online tutorial is also being offered as a trial this year to online students. Students can join with unit coordinator and peers for an hour to practice the weekly task, discuss the weekly content and connect with peers. It is anticipated online students attending this tutorial will allocate a further hour to complete online tasks and post as required to receive feedback, encouragement and advice. You are expected to dedicate approximately ten hours per week to this unit. This may be divided as follows: weekly lectures (1.5 hours) weekly reading (2 hours); f2f weekly tutorial (2 hours) / online tutorial and discussion posts (2 hours); quizzes and other activities (0.5 hrs), assessment (4 hours). Please be aware this may vary slightly from week to week depending on the topic and planned experiences. |
