Study

In the bustling corridors of Gold Coast Health, Catherine Walker stands as a beacon of innovation and dedication. As a Nurse Manager of Professional Practice, Catherine’s journey through the Master of Healthcare Redesign at the University of Tasmania has been nothing short of transformative.

A Perfect Fit

Catherine’s foray into postgraduate studies was driven by a desire to formalise and deepen her understanding of healthcare redesign.

“I had been considering postgraduate studies for a while but hadn’t found a program that truly resonated with me until I discovered the University of Tasmania’s Master of Healthcare Redesign,” she said.

The program’s alignment with her work on the “Releasing Time to Care” initiative at Gold Coast Health made it an ideal fit. “I was eager to formalise the skills I was already using and gain a deeper understanding of the field.”

Facing Challenges Head-On

The healthcare industry is fraught with challenges, from increasing demand for services, to limited resources. Catherine is acutely aware of these issues and is committed to addressing them through collaborative problem-solving and data-driven decision-making.

“By bringing together diverse stakeholders, including clinicians, administrators, and consumers, we can identify inefficiencies and develop innovative solutions,” she said.

Her passion for staff engagement, culture, and succession planning is evident as she strives to create a more supportive environment for healthcare staff.

A Journey of Discovery

Catherine’s academic journey has been filled with pleasant surprises. Despite the demands of balancing university, work, and personal life, she found the intellectual stimulation incredibly rewarding.

“The opportunity to explore new topics and perspectives has been a highlight of my academic journey,” she said.

Celebrating her successes along the way, including attending her graduation ceremony in Hobart, kept her motivated and proud of her achievements.

Empowering Future Leaders

One of the most impactful aspects of Catherine’s studies was the emphasis on redesign strategies. Implementing the “Releasing Time to Care” program was a significant milestone, but her understanding of global health systems, policy, and political influences has also been invaluable.

“This broader perspective has allowed me to see healthcare in a more holistic way,” she said.

Now, as a lecturer to emerging nurse leaders, Catherine emphasises the importance of lifelong learning and shares her experiences to inspire others.

A Pivotal Step

Completing the Master of Healthcare Redesign has been a pivotal step in Catherine’s career. She aims to use her advanced knowledge and skills to take on more leadership roles within the nursing field.

“The ability to critically analyse research and apply critical thinking skills will be invaluable in driving positive change,” she said.

Beyond professional benefits, the program has been a personal accomplishment, a testament to her dedication to lifelong learning, and a source of pride for her family.

Support and Sponsorship

Catherine’s journey was made possible through a partnership between Gold Coast Health and the University of Tasmania, which offered a 50% fee waiver on Commonwealth Supported Places.
