Dystopian dream fable is the dramatic platform for emerging theatre talent

Newsroom

Third-year Theatre and Performance students from the University of Tasmania are the stars on stage and backstage in a production of The Loom, a new play by Kit Lazaroo being performed this week in the Annexe Theatre at the Inveresk Campus, and next week at the  Ian Potter Recital Hall in Hobart.

The Loom is a dystopian fable set in the future, when citizens are managed by the Loom, a mysterious apparatus of control. In this world, poetry, song, dreams and wild visions of mythical creatures are removed from the minds of the populace - the only dreams possible are those made by the Loom.

The play takes us on a journey into a world darkened by bureaucracy and the machine, and lit by the human imagination.

Alongside stage management and performance, students have been engaged with all aspects of the production.

The performance is directed by Dr Jane Woollard, Coordinator of Theatre and Performance in the School of Creative Arts and Media at the University of Tasmania.

“The production is an example of the detailed and collaborative theatre practice taught the Theatre and Performance program. We have worked as an ensemble, with students contributing to costume, sound and poster design,” Dr Woollard said.

“This multi-dimensional approach to theatre as a total artwork develops the skills required of theatre makers in contemporary practice. Everyone has to put their creative shoulders to the wheel.”
