Building the next generation of perioperative nurses

Inside the theatre, every decision matters. This specialisation helps nurses make those decisions with confidence, clarity, and care.

Perioperative nursing is a world of precision, pressure, and purpose. It’s where nurses work shoulder-to-shoulder with surgeons, managing complex procedures and making critical decisions in real time.

The Perioperative Nursing specialisation in the Advanced Nursing program was created to meet the growing need for skilled theatre nurses, especially in regional and rural areas, where every operating room presents its own unique challenges.

“There were limited offerings in this space,” said Fiona Newman, specialisation lead and perioperative nurse. “We needed a strong foundational level that could support nurses across Australia, no matter where they worked.”

What makes this specialisation stand out is its alignment with ACORN standards. Every part of the curriculum is evidence-based and meets national benchmarks, ensuring students are trained to deliver safe, patient-centred care across the entire perianaesthesia continuum. “That comes down to the standards,” said Fiona. “We assure this through practical components, and we listen to our students.”

Students must be actively working in operating theatres to enrol. Surgery is invasive and complex, and the only way to truly understand it is to be immersed in it.

Throughout the program, students are supported by clinical educators, preceptors, and academics who are still active in the field. They’re not just observing, they’re part of the team. This hands-on exposure helps them connect theory to practice, build confidence, and engage in meaningful peer discussions.

In semester two, students step into leadership. They explore real-life scenarios, learn to speak up, and take ownership of their role in the surgical team. “Interdisciplinary collaboration is fundamental,” said Fiona. “Students work alongside surgeons and learn the specific communications, roles, and responsibilities that keep patients safe.”

One graduate now leads infection control rounds in his hospital, checking that sterilisation protocols are followed and standards are upheld.

“Good influence can mean good change,” said Fiona. “It’s a simple act with a huge impact on patient safety.”

The program also responds to the evolving challenges of healthcare. Academics stay connected to the floor, bringing real-world insight into every module. Students across different states share ideas, reflect on their practice, and influence each other through group discussions and practical tasks.

This specialisation suits nurses who are already in theatre—those who are curious, committed, and ready to go deeper. “It’s not just about getting a certificate,” said Fiona. “You’ve got to be prepared to do the work. Show up, be accountable, and be there for your patients.”

Balancing academic rigour with the realities of surgical work isn’t easy. But the program is built with compassion. “We’re aware of burnout and psychological safety,” said Fiona. “We want well-informed, well-rounded people who look after themselves and each other.”
