After many years of carving out a career as a carpentry educator with TAFE Queensland on the Gold Coast, Colin Bachelard decided it was time to upgrade his qualifications and his teaching style.
A seasoned educator, Colin had his Certificate in Training and Assessment (TAE), but was looking for a way to take his teaching practice and career advancement opportunities to the next level.
Encouraged by his colleagues, and aspiring to improve student outcomes, he enrolled in the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Adult and Applied Learning.
“I knew there was more to teaching than the TAE Qualification,” he said.
“This course offered a great chance to develop professionally, and the potential for a salary increase really stood out.”
Now in his sixties, Colin is studying part-time while continuing to work full-time. With his children now grown up, he has found the time and headspace to commit to study, although it has not been without its challenges.
“It’s been a balancing act,” he said. “But staying organised and prioritising tasks has helped me keep on top of everything.”
Despite some initial hesitation about returning to study, Colin quickly discovered the course was not only achievable, but a perfect fit.
“I was worried it might be too much,” he said. “But the way the degree is structured, especially how it aligns with TAFE’s learning platform, made it accessible and engaging.”
The course has already had a noticeable impact on his teaching.
“Learning about the professional teacher’s standards and available frameworks has helped me create a more fun and engaging environment.
“I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned directly to the classroom. Whether I’m working with 15-year-olds or international students, I feel confident I’m giving them the best experience possible.”
With his degree, Colin is setting himself up for future career progression and hopes to take on more senior roles within TAFE.
“This qualification is essential for advancement. It opens the door to promotion and helps avoid salary caps.
“As a mature professional, that kind of growth is really important.”
