Confidence, capability and care: Why nurses are choosing postgraduate study 

Studying a postgraduate nursing degree at the University of Tasmania goes beyond gaining a qualification — it’s about building confidence, sharpening clinical judgement and delivering care based on best practice.

For Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital critical care nurse Ruby Goddard, postgraduate study offered reassurance early in her career.

Ruby explained knowing this is best practice helps you trust your judgement and take those skills straight to the bedside.

“It consolidated my skills and gave me a lot more confidence,” she said.

Through the University’s focused, well-structured teaching and its strong connection between theory and practice, Ruby became more confident in her decision making and better placed to support and educate others.

“The postgraduate study or study in general helped with cohesion between learning from a theoretical perspective and then from senior staff and their experiences as well. Once others saw our confidence grow, more staff wanted to do it,” Ruby said.

Backed by a strong partnership between Health at the University of Tasmania and Calvary, postgraduate study proved both achievable and valuable.
