From everyday questions to data-driven discovery

Hannah Sheers's interest in science was sparked by the scientific explanations of everyday phenomena. She recalls her fascination with understanding why her letterbox rusted, and the specific angles required to see rainbows. These small moments of discovery ignited her curiosity and set her on the path to studying science at university.

Hannah’s journey – from a high school student with little interest in science, to a leading researcher in sustainable chemistry – highlights the value of education and curiosity.

Having earned her Bachelor of Science with Honours in Chemistry from the University of Tasmania, she is now paving the way in research focused on reducing fossil fuel reliance, and she credits her degree for equipping her with the tools to make a meaningful impact.

Hannah chose the University of Tasmania for its strong alignment with her values and interests. Growing up in Tasmania, she developed a deep appreciation for nature and sustainability, which mirrored the University’s commitment to research excellence in these areas.

This was perfectly illustrated through her Honours project: collaborating with local industries, Hannah explored using timber waste to create bio-based plastics, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

“Studying at UTAS has provided the perfect platform for me to pursue research in an area that I’m deeply passionate about,” she said.

“The emphasis on research and sustainability, along with the small class sizes and close relationships with lecturers, made a huge difference to my learning experience.”

Hannah’s undergraduate years were enriched by two Dean’s Summer Research Scholarships, which gave her invaluable hands-on research experience. These projects offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into academic life, allowing her to develop skills in critical thinking and time management – qualities essential for her future career.

Hannah also balanced her academic studies with her love for Ultimate Frisbee. As a university elite athlete, she represented Australia at the 2023 World Under-24 Ultimate Championships in the United Kingdom, and won bronze with the Australian Women’s team at the 2024 World Ultimate Championships on the Gold Coast.

She credits the financial support from her scholarships for easing the burden of balancing work and study, enabling her to dedicate time to both her education and sport.

Now embarking on a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research project, Hannah is focusing on developing bio-derived alternatives to petroleum-based plastics. Her aim is to contribute innovative solutions to reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels.
