Final-year Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) students rolled out the red carpet for more than 200 members of Tasmania’s ICT industry and alumni at the University of Tasmania Sandy Bay campus recently, showcasing their ICT capstone projects at an Expo designed to test their skills.
Eight student teams presented projects that were developed in collaboration with real-world industry clients, demonstrating an impressive range of digital solutions, including websites, mobile apps, an AI computer vision project and interactive games.
Highlights included a price tracker app, a game for teaching music theory to primary school children, an interactive Tasmanian climate data map, and an AI system capable of detecting roof faults.
Coordinator of the event and ICT Lecturer, Dr Lindsay Wells, said the students gained experience in explaining and pitching their highly technical work to a general audience comprised of fellow students, staff members, alumni and distinguished industry members.
“We wanted to give students the opportunity to make those valuable connections with industry, both through undertaking these capstone projects alongside them, and by having the chance to share their final work at this Expo event,” Dr Wells said.
“The students were also assessed on this experience, rather than through a more traditional presentation or by submitting an assessment item. It really encouraged them to extend their skills across not just technical areas, but also practicing their soft skills, and see what it’s really like in the workplace.”
In addition to the capstone teams, Bachelor and Masters of ICT students also presented work from other units such as Mobile Application Development and Games Design. A screening of Computer Graphics, Animation, and Virtual/Mixed Reality projects also featured in the showcase.

For the attendees, it was an opportunity to also engage with emerging tech talent and explore potential future collaborations, with many industry visitors inspired to become clients for future student projects.
The next Sandy Bay-based Expo will be held in October 2025, and plans are underway for a Launceston event soon.
