Carli Shaw still remembers the first patient she cared for in a regional oncology unit. The diagnosis was life-changing, the treatment complex, and the emotional toll heavy. But what stayed with her most was the difference a nurse could make, not just in managing symptoms, but in helping someone feel seen, heard and supported.
Now, as the specialisation lead for oncology nursing in our Advanced Nursing program, Carli brings a lot of experience to the classroom. She’s worked across haematology, transplant, clinical trials and oncology day units, and spent over a decade as a clinical nurse educator in a regional health service. Her passion for equitable care, especially in rural and remote areas, shapes everything she teaches.
“Cancer changes lives, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. Nurses are often the ones who help patients navigate that journey.”
The oncology nursing specialisation is designed for registered nurses who are already working in oncology and want to deepen their knowledge. With three oncology-specific units, students explore everything from genetics and diagnostics to treatment side effects and oncological emergencies. The curriculum is grounded in real-world practice and evidence-based care, with a strong focus on holistic support.
Cancer research moves fast — with hundreds of new studies published every day, keeping up can feel overwhelming. This specialisation teaches nurses how to navigate that pace with confidence. You’ll learn how to find, assess and apply the latest evidence to your practice, turning complex data into meaningful care decisions. Whether it’s a new treatment protocol or a subtle shift in patient needs, you’ll be equipped to respond with clarity, compassion and clinical insight.
Carli’s current role as Team Lead for Clinical Trials means students benefit from the latest research. “There are hundreds of new papers published every day,” she explains. “We teach nurses how to find, understand and apply that knowledge to improve patient outcomes.”
The program also tackles the emotional demands of oncology nursing. Self-care strategies are embedded throughout, helping nurses build resilience while maintaining compassion. Students learn to design resources for patients, improve communication, and make small changes that lead to big improvements in care.
Whether you’re just starting out in oncology or have years of experience, this specialisation offers the tools to stay current, confident and connected. As cancer demographics shift and more young people face diagnoses, the need for skilled, empathetic nurses has never been greater.
Carli puts it simply: “If you care deeply, think critically and want to make a real difference, this is where you belong.”
