For international student Rayne, studying at the University of Tasmania has been about more than just academic growth, it’s been a journey toward confidence, independence, and connection.
Originally from China, Rayne moved to Hobart to pursue her Master of Professional Accounting. Now in her first year, she’s settling in well, thanks to support systems from the University, approachable teaching staff, and a growing sense of belonging in the local community.
“I’ve felt really supported from the beginning,” Rayne says. “From orientation to classes, and even finding part-time work, the University has helped me adjust and feel at home.”
Back in China, Rayne completed her undergraduate degree before deciding it was time to challenge herself further. Tasmania offered the ideal mix of quality learning, lifestyle, and a welcoming environment.
“The teaching here is so engaging,” she says. “It’s interactive and practical. We’re encouraged to think critically and apply what we learn to real-world scenarios, that’s something I really value.”
She’s particularly enjoyed how accessible her lecturers are, and how easy it is to reach out for help. That level of support, combined with clear and structured content, has boosted her confidence in the classroom.
Outside of study, Rayne has found a part-time job in Hobart’s CBD, which has helped her ease into the local lifestyle, meet new people, and build her independence.
“It’s been a great way to explore the city and feel more connected to the community,” she says. “It’s also helping me manage my time and responsibilities better.”
Rayne has also made the most of University support services, including career guidance, wellbeing resources, and student development programs.
“The University really does care about international students,” she says. “It’s easy to get help when you need it.”
Looking ahead, Rayne is excited to continue building on this strong foundation, academically and personally.
“This year has already helped me grow so much,” she says. “I’m more confident, more independent, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.”
