In emergency nursing, no two days are the same. One moment might involve a cardiac arrest, the next a mental health crisis. It’s fast, intense, and emotionally charged. That’s why the emergency nursing specialisation in the Advanced Nursing program is built to reflect the reality of the job, hands-on, high-pressure, and deeply practical.
“What makes emergency nursing unique is its practical, hands-on approach,” says Allison Jordan, nurse practitioner and specialisation lead. “Instead of traditional exams or assignments, students learn through immersive, real-world experiences that prepare them for the fast-paced nature of emergency care.”
As students study while working, they can immediately apply the advanced knowledge gained in the postgraduate program into their workplace practice. Through the two practice subjects (CNA784 and CNA785), they develop specialised capabilities while performing their professional role in the emergency department.
"This immediate integration of theory and practice builds confidence and resilience early on,” said Allison.
The curriculum focuses on essential skills like resuscitation, CPAP, BiPAP, triage, and comprehensive patient assessment. Each is taught and assessed in real-world settings, ensuring students are ready to deliver high-quality care under pressure.
In semester two, students apply their learning in trauma care and the management of acutely unwell patients. Unit 787 introduces a gaming module where students answer clinical questions to “level up,” reinforcing knowledge while sharpening their judgement. “It’s an engaging way to build decision-making skills under pressure,” said Allison.
But emergency nursing is about more than clinical expertise. The program integrates interdisciplinary collaboration through rural placements, palliative care, and multicultural health experiences. Ethical discussions and teamwork with allied health professionals help students deliver inclusive, culturally safe care.
Flexibility is built in. “We know our students are working nurses,” Allison said.
“That’s why we deliver learning in short, manageable formats, like five-minute presentation snippets and accessible webinars. They can learn on the job, supported by mentors who guide them through the challenges of emergency care.”
Graduates leave with more than just skills, they leave with the mindset to lead. Whether they move into clinical roles, education, or management, they’re equipped to innovate, ask “why,” and improve patient outcomes. Many set personal goals during the course, such as enhancing communication or becoming stronger leaders, and use these goals to drive real change in their departments.
“Students are encouraged to think critically about established practices, with support from educators, they grow professionally and explore new ways of delivering care.”

“You need to genuinely want to make an impact,” Allison said. “In the Emergency Department, you’re often caring for people at their most vulnerable. It’s challenging but incredibly rewarding.”

“We help students reflect on their experiences and learn from seasoned emergency nurses who’ve seen it all.”.
