Designed specifically for students in Years 10 - 12 who are currently studying Media, English or other related subjects, this practical workshop offers students the opportunity to develop a range of media resources around a provided scenario. Working from a briefing, students will produce a range of texts designed for various platforms and audiences.

Students will experience:

  • A discussion about how news media must keep ahead of unfolding events in the interest of public safety.
  • A brief introduction to writing media releases, the value of social media in an emergency and the process of a media conference.
  • Work in small crisis communication teams and with an information pack containing details about a crisis scenario (a flood, building evacuation, or airport incident).
  • The groups are tasks with producing different media objectives: writing news updates, producing a media release; and creating social media posts.
  • After 20 minutes, the crisis has changed, the story has moved on, and each group must update their texts.
  • At 40 minutes, a short press conference is called, and students can ask questions to get more information.
  • The session finishes with a showcase where teams present their stories and compare how the same material was handled across formats.

Throughout this experience, students learn:

  • To follow a story in real time and how to produce texts for specific audiences.
  • The basic form of news media texts: the news update, social media updates and media releases, and how a media conference functions.

Teachers receive follow up resources so classes can replicate the activity with different scenarios.
