Designed specifically for students in Years 10-12 who are currently studying Media, English or other related subjects, the Media and Communication: News Story Workshop allows students to:

  • Work in small newsroom teams and receive a media kit with a press release, background facts, quotes and supporting footage and audio.
  • Select the media platform (print, audio or video), and using cameras, audio recorders, computers and editing software supplied by the University, identify the narrative angle, write a strong lead and build the story, and shape it for their chosen platform.
  • The session finishes with a showcase where teams present their stories and compare how the same material was handled across formats.

Throughout this experience, students learn to:

  • Structure a news story and to adapt their writing and production choices for print, radio, video and online audiences.
  • Build teamwork and production skills and develop a clearer sense of how the choice of platform influences what a story looks and sounds like.
  • Teachers receive supporting resources to support extension of the activity in the classroom.
