About the program
Micro Worlds – STEM Up Close
Venture beyond the limits of human sight with the University of Tasmania.
A free, curriculum aligned program for Year 7 and 8 students on the North West and West Coast, designed to:
- Spark curiosity and build confidence in STEM
- Enhance classroom learning through specialist expertise
- Increase access to high quality STEM experiences in regional communities
Program Options
Option 1: Micro Safari
Best Suited For: Science classes
Experience: See everyday things in a new light. Using live microscopy projected on the big screen, a UTAS facilitator will guide students on an exploration of the natural world otherwise invisible to the naked eye - including insects and the microcosm of life inside a single water drop.
Key Learning Focus: Single and multi-cellular organisms; animals and plants; structure and function; biodiversity; ecosystem roles.
Option 2: The Art of Science
Best Suited For: Art classes
Experience: Discover how art and science work together. Following in the footsteps of scientific illustrators, students observe the tiny details of real-world samples. With images under the microscope displayed live on screen, students represent their experience of hidden worlds artistically in their media of choice.
Key Learning Focus: Observation skills; connections between art and science; visual communication; art as a scientific storytelling tool.
