Critical Practices in Art: Writing FSA222

Introduction

This unit will introduce you to writing as a mode of creative expression as well as critique. It will focus on the wide range of ways artists have used the written word as part of project development and cross-arts experimentation. By juxtaposing writing with other creative disciplines, you will explore writing in relation to objects, images, history, narrative, time-based media, site, experience, performance, and more.

You will engage with key contemporary, historical, philosophical and cultural debates related to writing and the visual arts through the lectures and readings, and you will be guided through ways to connect these to creative practice in tutorial sessions. The development of your skills and knowledge will be shared through discussions, presentations, writing exercises, making tasks, critique, peer review, reflection and regular journaling.
