Paramedic Practice 7 CAA310
Professional Experience Placement (PEP) Students will be allocated PEP within individual health care agencies. Students must be available 5 days a week (40 hours) during the allocated PEP, and must be prepared to undertake a range of shifts – morning, evening and nightshift, which may include weekends, as per roster provided by the healthcare agency. Students may be expected to relocate and are expected to travel to where PEP is available. To be eligible to undertake PEP, all students must be ‘Verified’ as meeting College of Health and Medicine PEP Safety in Practice Compliance as per the Course Entry Requirements. Students who cannot or do not comply with these requirements will not be allocated PEP and therefore will not be able to complete this unit. PEP dates MAY differ from University of Tasmania calendar semester dates.
Introduction
This unit expands on paramedic practice and introduces the student to intensive health and physical assessment of the acutely ill patient as well as the patient suffering from chronic disease. This unit reflects the change in paramedic practice in line with the changing health care environment and challenges the student to expand on their practice and assessment of patients throughout the lifespan, taking into account social, cultural and socio-economic factors.

Learning Outcomes
- construct a comprehensive assessment of a patient which can be used to inform the delivery of patient care [ppcs 7.1]
- formulate clinically sound plans for patient management based on assessment findings in a patient centred model [ppcs 8.1, ppcs 8.3]
- perform a broad range of clinical and health assessment skills demonstrating an understanding of the relevance and importance of comprehensive patient assessment [ppcs 8.4].
- analyse and interpret assessment findings to contribute to the development of a provisional diagnosis [ppcs 8.1].
- apply problem solving processes to the management of patients based on assessment findings, in an inter-professional health care environment [ppcs 8.2, ppcs 9.1]
- apply a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to facilitate the assessment of patients accommodating diverse cultural, social and socioeconomic backgrounds [ppcs 4.2].
- develop an intercultural awareness and gain an understanding of the impact of culture on paramedic practice. [ppcs 3.1, ppcs 4.2]
- demonstrate knowledge of the changing discipline of paramedic practice, applying this knowledge to the provision of service in an inter-professional context [ppcs 4.1].
- develop a team work approach to practice which will enhance the delivery of health services to the community [ppcs 4.1].
