Medicine Year 5A unit (CAM751)

Introduction

This unit, along with 5B, is an integrated Clinical Placement year. Students are placed in a range of clinical placements. Student learning outcomes are organised to deliver the Australian Medical Council, AMC, medical student outcomes. This unit is integrated with the programme in the previous year of the course. Case based learning sessions will cover core clinical issues and will be delivered by a mixture of learning opportunities and will require a self-directed learning approaches. The curriculum uses the AMC 4 domains as an organising principle under which the outcomes are assessed. The 4 domains are: Science and Scholarship (the medical graduate as scientist and scholar), Clinical Practice (the medical graduate as practitioner), Health and Society (the medical graduate as a health advocate) and Professionalism and Leadership (the medical graduate as a professional and leader). On completion of CAM751 students receive an AO (Assessment Ongoing) result. The final result for this unit is granted on completion of CAM752. Note: Students are required to enrol concurrently in CAM751 and CAM752. In order for students to undertake Professional Experience Placements (PEPs), there are mandatory requirements to be completed before students can enter a PEP venue. These are outlined in the Safety in Practice Agreement (https://www.utas.edu.au/health/professional-experience-placement/safety-in-practice-requirements). The Safety in Practice Disclosures section requires the student to establish, with the University, their capacity to perform the mandatory functional requirements of the course in which they are enrolled. The Safety in Practice Agreement also requires the student to comply with the UTAS Behaviour Policy, agree to undertake a police (criminal record) check, working with vulnerable persons registration and provide evidence of their immunisation/vaccination status. Students enrolled in the Tasmanian School of Medicine are required to comply with these requirements prior to the allocation of, and participation in, professional experience placements (which includes community engagement activities) and clinical rotations in health care settings. Students who do not comply will not be placed or will be removed from placements and therefore will not meet the requirements of the unit. Teaching Pattern	Clinical Practice – 32-38 hours/week for 15 weeks Project –  45 days  across Units 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B Individually timetabled and approved program for students to complete MD project over 45 days equivalent across Years 4 and 5 Tutorial – 2hrs weekly – Case based learning Block Teaching – 1 week every 6 weeks x6 per year of teaching (lectures, workshops, tutorials).
