Complex Care in Midwifery Practice unit (CNA623)

Introduction

This unit provides you with the opportunity to examine your responsibility to provide safe midwifery care to women and their families during complex labour, birth and the postpartum period. The unit builds upon your capability that considers women and infants who are at risk and in complex situations, which may impact maternal, fetal and neonatal health. Emphasis is on working with women holistically in complex situations, developing appropriate referral skills, and working collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team to enhance the outcomes for the woman and their family. This unit is one of two specialist midwifery practice units that contribute to the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes/attributes required for competent beginning-level midwifery practice. By the completion of the course, you are required to demonstrate the acquisition of the current NMBA Midwife Standards for Practice.

Learning Outcomes

• Critically synthesise midwifery theories to plan, provide, evaluate and guide culturally safe, inclusive, woman-centred midwifery care for women, their unborn/newborn infantsand significant others experiencing complex childbirth and puerperium.
• Critically analyse deviations from normal during complex childbirth and the puerperium, exercising advanced clinical judgement to determine appropriate consultation and referral, using collaborative decision making and timely initiation of of an emergency response.
• Evaluate and implement strategies that ensure women’s autonomy and centrality in decision-making during complex childbirth and/or the puerperium, ensuring inclusive, ethical, culturally safe, and evidence-informed care.
• Demonstrate professional capabilities, ethical accountability and adherence to the current Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice when providing midwifery care in complex childbirth and the puerperium.

Teaching

Teaching Pattern	On-Campus Residential School - 8 hours per day over a single week Online webinar - 1 hour, 15 times during the study period. Midwifery Practice Experience - Completion of the expected number of care experiences in MPE Portfolio in accordance with ANMAC Midwifery Standards for Practice, during concurrent employment of a minimum of 0.6 FTE in a Midwifery unit.
