Introduction
In this unit you will be introduced to foods and their effect on human health. You will gain an understanding of the role of the nutrients in the body, their effects on health and the recommendations of the Australian Dietary Guidelines. You will also be introduced to methods used to assess food intake and you will learn how to perform dietary analysis through the use of food composition tables in relation to the Australian Nutrient Reference Values. This will provide you with the skills to evaluate the adequacy of dietary intake and general health status in adults.

Learning Outcomes
- Acquire detailed knowledge of the nutritional requirements for, and fates of the major macro and micro nutrients and the roles of these nutrients in chronic disease, and the changing nutrient needs over the lifespan.
- Develop applied skills relevant to the area of nutrition including ability to calculate ideal body weight, find and interpret up to date research on nutrition, and analyse the diet of and provide appropriate dietary recommendations to a wide range of individuals.
- Communicate appropriate knowledge and practical recommendations using terminology appropriate to academic staff, peers and case study clients.
