Introduction
This unit examines the roles and functions that the police play as a major agency of governance in society. The structures and strategies of policing are analysed and the relationships between the police, other governmental institutions and the general public are discussed. Students examine a range of contemporary issues impacting on policing including: police accountability; police culture; police deviance; oversight authorities; the managerial approach to policing; leadership and human resource management in policing; and the marketisation and performance management of policing.
