Resilient Systems unit (ENG310)

Introduction

This unit focuses on the design of resilient systems and the development of specialised engineering skills, preparing students to address complex, real-world challenges in diverse professional contexts. Through hands-on projects and collaborative team environments, students will refine their ability to lead and manage multidisciplinary teams, facilitating effective collaboration and conflict resolution to achieve project goals.

 

A core emphasis is placed on resilience and sustainability in engineering, incorporating asset life cycle management, whole-life costing, vulnerability mapping, and condition monitoring. Students will explore self-healing infrastructure, modular design for rapid repairs, and sensor-based condition monitoring to enhance system resilience.

 

Each engineering specialisation (Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical) will engage with domain-specific technical content through specialisation modules.

 

Throughout the unit, students will build leadership and project management expertise, including workshop facilitation, stakeholder engagement, and outcome estimation. By the end of this unit, students will be equipped to design sustainable systems and lead diverse teams in delivering innovative solutions to complex engineering problems.

 

Students will continue to engage in the Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) in this unit, where they will apply their learning in collaborative, multi-cohort project environments. VIP runs from year 1 to year 3 in both semesters and involves students working in teams across year levels and specialisations to contribute to real-world design and research challenges related to Climate Safe Engineering. These project experiences will enable students to develop the professional skills necessary for engineering while integrating their technical knowledge. In the third year of the VIP, students will lead their team project, managing the team efforts, prioritising goals and setting deadlines. They will document and report team progress, model inclusive behavior, and reflect on the technical success of their design solutions.
