This unit is available as an elective for third year degree students who have a background in biology or introductory biochemistry.
Introduction
In this unit you will explore the impact of aquatic animal feeds and nutrition on fish performance and seafood product quality. You will investigate the relationships between nutrition feeding technology and practices, feed formulation, nutritional physiology and biochemistry of aquatic animals. You are encouraged to critique nutrition research, experimental designs and nutrition models. You will gain a deep understanding of nutritional science and the role of aquaculture nutrition in sustainable aquaculture.

Learning Outcomes
- Describe the importance of different dietary components, effective feed formulation, balanced diets, use of ingredients for aquafeeds and the production of aquafeeds
- Apply the knowledge of nutritional concepts to optimise growth efficiency and product quality for the major groups of farmed aquatic animals: fish, crustaceans and molluscs
- Design aquaculture nutrition experiments and analyse and evaluate data
- Discuss the importance of nutrition research for sustainable aquaculture and the responsible use of global resources
