Introduction

This unit explores how animal science production can be expanded to meet future needs while maintaining social licence to operate and minimising climate impacts. Students will gain knowledge of the science underpinning aspects of modern animal production and develop an awareness of the major ethical, welfare and sustainability issues impacting animal industries. Students will have the opportunity to dive deeper into ethical and sustainability issues that they are passionate about and explore a range of technological solutions. Critical thinking skills will be developed during the assessment tasks which require engaging with the scientific literature, identifying quality sources of information, and constructing well-reasoned arguments. The face-to-face classes will apply the theoretical knowledge to practical situations in a range of activities including tutorials, laboratories, and field trips. Understanding the challenges and future possibilities for animal production and being able to critically evaluate information and construct well-reasoned arguments will prepare students for undertaking animal research or working in professional roles including as growers, consultants, extension officers and processors.
