Introduction

Environmental Monitoring and Remediation utilises the diversity of examples of environmental chemistry in natural, urban and industrial environments within Tasmania to develop an understanding of the sources and fate of chemical contaminants in the environment, and an understanding of the technologies and management options that can be utilised to manage, remediate, recycle, and upcycle wastes. Learning activities will provide opportunities for you to develop the skills required for conducting environmental assessments and preparing environmental management plans. You will be introduced to options for minimising waste, along with contaminant containment and remediation technologies, and traditional and new environmental monitoring techniques. This knowledge, along with an understanding of the framework by which environmental guidelines are developed, will provide the basis for developing risk-based approaches to environmental assessments, and designing solutions to waste management.

Specific topics covered in the unit include: 1. Chemical pathways and partitioning in the environment. 2. Environmental monitoring and assessment. 3. Sustainability and environmental management. 4. Waste management and utilisation, contaminant containment and environmental remediation.

You are expected to undertake prescribed reading at an advanced level on recent developments in environmental chemistry to supplement unit content.
