What Helps Us Grow?

Learning Level: Kinder

Theme Area:

Description: 'What Helps Us Grow?' Each child was encouraged to consider what helps them to grow and also what does not help them to grow. Each child would draw their response. Examples included: 1. Play! Why would you watch TV when the sun is out? 2.Too much sugar does not help us grow 3. no sun and pollution. The teacher or assistant teacher would invite each child to share their drawing with the class and describe what it represented. The teacher/teaching assistant would then add the information to their drawing. The individual artefacts/pictures were then displayed together as a group artefact to be shared on the wall in the classroom. This became a conversation point for the class, visiting students (from other classes), parents and other members of the school community.

Measures of Success: Students understand the factors that support them to grow and the things that may not help them to grow and be healthy. Students are able to identify at least one factor that supports their positive growth and are able to draw a representation of this. Their work can be shared verbally and understood by others. Finally the class has a group piece that can be displayed as a friendly reminder to everyone regarding their healthy growth.
