TILES is the focal point for research conducted in policing, forensic science and law enforcement related studies.

TILES was formed by the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management (DPFEM).

TILES has provided over 20 years of innovative, impactful, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research that is recognised locally, nationally and internationally. The Institute was founded in 2002 and fully established in 2003. It was the first institute dedicated solely to the study of law enforcement in Australia.

Excellence in law enforcement research

Collaborative research that links academics with practitioners is a hallmark of that research. TILES is in active collaborative relationship with many (local, national and international) research centres, institutions and organisations.

Our Public Safety and Police Studies degrees build on a strong social sciences, policing and public health foundation and provides specific knowledge and skills of policing and public safety.

The Institute provides opportunities for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) programs - the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Research (MRes), and full fee paying postgraduate courses.

Communities of Practice (CoP)

The TILES Communities of Practice is a platform for knowledge exchange across policing, public safety, and community wellbeing. It brings together academics, pracademics, practitioners, policy agencies, and community organisations to explore the critical issues shaping contemporary community safety. Through these cross-sector conversations, TILES fosters shared learning, evidence-led innovation, and codesigned responses to the complex issues faced by police organisations and their partners.
