Intro to the pharmaceutical industry

Designed to be ‘Just in Time’ training for new pharmaceutical industry personnel, this training introduces key concepts and information about the industry to help you develop an understanding of the industry's structure, trends, activities and value. It introduces fundamental legislative frameworks, types of therapeutic goods, their authorisation for use in Australia, supply, monitoring and advertising. This program scopes the Australian health landscape, trends and health priorities to investigate how Australians access one of the best healthcare systems in the world.

This JIT training will take approximately 3-5 hours of study. A transcript will be provided upon completion.

The cost of this training is $150 incl. GST.

Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Outline the types of pharmaceutical companies and general industry structure internationally and within Australia
• Describe the value of the Australian pharmaceutical industry on the economy and health of Australians
• Describe pharmaceutical R&D, manufacturing and distribution activities in Australia
• Identify fundamental legislative frameworks that govern the Australian pharmaceutical industry
• Classify types of therapeutic goods developed by the pharmaceutical industry and describe how they are regulated
• Explain how therapeutic goods are authorised for supply to the Australian market
• Describe ongoing monitoring and safety assessment of therapeutic goods in Australia
• Describe legislative requirements and guidelines that apply to the advertising of all types of therapeutic goods, and more specifically to prescription medicines
• Explain how Australians access health care through the public and/or private health systems
• Discuss the structure of, and stakeholder involvement in, the Australian healthcare system
• Identify the National Health Priorities for Australians
• Describe the principles of Quality Use of Medicines (QUM)
