This Just In Time (JIT) training details the different types of vaccines, both the traditional technologies and new technologies that have coincided with advances in genetic engineering. The course examines the composition of various vaccine types (live attenuated, inactivated, subunit, toxoid, DNA/RNA-based, viral vector, outer membrane vesicle, bacterial vector, and virus-like particle vaccines), weighing up their benefits and limitations.

It is recommended, although not required, to have a grounding in human anatomy (such as provided by CEP Program 3: Human Anatomy and Physiology) before attempting this short course.

This JIT training will take approximately 3-5 hours of study. A transcript will be provided upon completion.

The cost of this training is $150 inc.  GST.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the short course, students should be able to:

  • Describe the different types of vaccine products, their modes of action and list examples
  • Compare the benefits and limitations of the different vaccine platforms
  • Outline different methods of simplifying vaccination through use of mono- and polyvalent vaccines, chimeric and combination vaccines
  • Outline the progress of therapeutic vaccines development
