An Honours Course is a one-year full-time program designed for high-achieving students who are ready to deepen their expertise and explore their passion through research. Honours combines advanced study with a significant research project in a chosen field. Whether you're aiming to boost your employability, develop specialised analytical skills, or pave the way to a PhD, an Honours degree offers a powerful platform to elevate your academic and professional future.
The Bachelor of Environmental Design with Honours is for graduates of Bachelor-level degrees in Design or Architecture. Students in the program pursue their own projects under the supervision of academics in the School of Architecture and Design. Supervisors and projects must be agreed before completing applications. Study location, supervision parameters, and project type and outputs are all negotiated with supervisors in advance of commencement.

The honours course is aimed specifically at students who wish to continue further studies in a related research field. Graduates of the course are eligible to enter a higher degree in most related fields. The School provides a Master of Design by research degree course and PhD program.

Entry requirements
Before beginning their course of study for the degree of BEnvDes(Hons) students shall have:
- Qualified for admission to the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Design (BEnvDes) in this University or qualified for admission to a degree in another design course in a tertiary institution approved by the College of Sciences and Engineering; and
- Achieved an Average Weighted Mark of at least 60% in the units of the final year of the BEnvDes course or an equivalent design course in another tertiary institution approved by the College.
Admission is conditional on research project and supervisor availability.
Admission to Honours courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects and the English language requirements to be eligible for an offer, as detailed below.

This degree requires an IELTS (Academic) of 6.0 (no individual band less than 6.0).
For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship or prior studies in English in an approved country, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are available for this course. For eligible domestic students, this means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.
We are unable to provide an indicative fee based on previous enrolments as the current structure of this course is being delivered for the first time in 2027.

HECS-HELP loans
You may be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.
