Beginning in 2025, students will be able to study their whole BMedScMD course on the beautiful North-West Coast of Tasmania. Students can apply for this option through the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream.
We prioritise entry to this scheme for applicants from rural and regional areas. If you are from a rural area and interested in a rural career, this training stream is for you!
We are committed to the health and wellbeing of the Tasmanian community and to providing opportunities for rural and Tasmanian students to achieve their educational aspirations. This new Stream is part of our vision to overcome barriers for students, build a health workforce for regional and rural Tasmania, and give back to the communities in which our students learn.
Twenty domestic places are available each year for applicants applying to the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream. You will complete the full BMedScMD degree at our Cradle Coast campus and Rural Clinical School in Burnie.

NOTE: Acceptance of a place in the Tasmanian Rural Training Stream will require you to complete all five years of your BMedScMD course at the Cradle Coast campus (Burnie) and associated training sites.
Places in this scheme are open to all domestic applicants and assessed on the same criteria – see Entry Requirements.
Offers will be prioritised based on the following Tiers:
- Tier 1: Tasmanian Rural Training Stream geographical footprint residents, defined as applicants living in all Tasmanian MM3-7 locations, as well as Tasmanian postcodes beginning with 73(XX) and 72(XX)
- Tier 2: applicants living in other Tasmanian MM2 areas
- Tier 3: applicants living in interstate MM3-7 areas
- Tier 4: applicants living in interstate MM1-2 areas.
We determine your Tier by assessing your full past and current residential address history that you provide in your online BMedScMD application.
You need to complete all the steps to be eligible for an offer in this Stream:
- Commence your University of Tasmania application for the BMedScMD degree (course code H7X) via the online application portal.
- Choose Cradle Coast campus when listing preferences.
- You can select Hobart campus as another preference, if you wish to also apply for a BMedScMD place in Hobart.
- Provide details of your home addresses since birth, including your current address:
- Click on the red text that says “Provide Tasmanian and/or other rural address details here” and use the green “Add” tab if you have more than one address to include.
- Press the "Save Address" tab at the bottom of the page
- Complete the rest of the online application and press submit.
