Some of the University of Tasmania’s best athletes will make their way to Perth at the end of the week to take part in the UniSport Nationals.

The large contingent of UTAS Sport competitors is gearing up for the multi-sport competition which will see them take on other Australian university athletes from September 24-30.

University of Tasmania Sport Operations Manager Anthony Jusup said it was one of the largest groups of athletes the University has taken to the UniSport Nationals.

Anthony said the Tasmanian students will compete in the sports of basketball, futsal, hockey, badminton, squash, fencing, sailing and rowing.

“We’re really excited to have so many students taking part in the games this year,” he said.

“There are quite a few elite athletes among our ranks this year and they’ll all be going for gold.

“The national games are a terrific opportunity for students from all campuses to bond through sport at a competitive level.”

University of Tasmania's Sam King (Sailing), Madeline Straatsma (Basketball) and William Chen (Badminton) are among the large Tasmanian team heading to Perth this week for the UniSport Nationals.

Sam King will be competing in the sailing at the Royal Perth Yacht Club and will use the games as a springboard to bigger things.

“I’m going away to the European championships after I get back from the UniSport games, so I’ll be race hardened by then,” he said.

The UniSport Nationals provide an opportunity for students at 43 member universities from across Australia to compete head to head in a number of national standard sporting competitions. The Nationals are the flagship event each year, with more than 5000 competitors expected to take part in 2022.
