Calvin Christian School wins 2024 Science and Engineering Challenge grand finals

After conquering their regional heats, 8 teams of Year 9 and 10 students battled it out for top honours in the state grand finals of the annual Science and Engineering Challenge held in Launceston, Monday 27 May.

Calvin Christian School took out the top gong scoring the highest overall points throughout the day, with Launceston Christian School coming second place. The winning team will travel to Sydney in October for the national finals.

Throughout the challenge, Year 9 and 10 students from across the state drew on their teamwork and creativity to solve challenges involving building bridges, designing autonomous gliders, designing and build an earthquake-proof apartment block and more.

The event aims to inspire students to consider pursuing a career in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field by immersing them in fun, hands-on activities.

University of Tasmania Acting Executive Dean of the College of Sciences and Engineering, Dr Angela Castles, said there had never been a better time for students to explore the options in STEM.

“We need more scientists and engineers to help tackle issues such as climate change, protecting our endangered species and driving our technological future. There is no better place to develop those skills than right here in Tasmania," Dr Castles said.

“Congratulations to all the students who took part in the 2024 Science and Engineering Challenge, and to Calvin Christian School who are this year’s winning school.

“It’s been wonderful to see so many bright young minds working together and showcasing their talents.”

The annual Science and Engineering Challenge attracted 1303 Tasmanian students throughout May, as part of its national 2024 event series.

The annual event is presented by the University of Newcastle, in partnership with the University of Tasmania, the Tasmanian Government’s Department for Education, Children and Young People, TasWater, Hydro Tasmania, Engineers Australia and the Rotary Clubs of Tasmania.
